Petroleum Development Oman boosts sustainability with GE Digital’s advanced energy management system

  • New GE Digital Customer Will Use Advanced Energy Management System (AEMS) to Support Lean and Sustainability Initiatives

  • Oil and gas company seeks to optimize reliable operation of micro-grid transmission grid and maximize renewable energy with full production control

  • Solution delivers operational performance, minimizes risk and increases flexibility

SAN RAMON, Calif., April 20, 2022–(BUSINESS WIRE)–GE Digital today announced that Oil Development Oman (PDO), the leading oil and gas exploration and production company in the Sultanate of Oman, has purchased Advanced Energy Management System (AEMS). GE Digital software is designed to enable PDO to plan, control and optimize renewable energy production to keep its oil production plants running reliably and efficiently.

PDO supplies the majority of crude oil production and natural gas supply to the country of Oman. The company runs its own electrical grid – a micro-grid – to serve its business. A microgrid is a locally controllable network that can operate autonomously from the main network. By using a microgrid, PDO can be more resilient, potentially less expensive, and operate more efficiently. Conversely, when connected to Oman’s main grid, PDO can supply electricity to the country.

PDO strives to operate in an environmentally responsible and sustainable manner. To be a more sustainable company, PDO initiated a Lean program to streamline operations, reduce waste, eliminate inefficiency and avoid duplication of activities.

“Our goal is to meet our power needs and support a stable grid. To do this, we needed efficient system management that allows us to be proactive,” said Zahir Al-Busaidi Infrastructure Power Systems Department Manager for Petroleum Development Oman. “The addition of GE Digital’s software will support the efficient management of our microgrid to keep our business running and help us prepare for renewable energy challenges and opportunities in the future.”

GE Digital’s AEMS is designed to integrate with electric utility functions, such as plant and field management, asset and maintenance management, internal IT services, security, substation automation systems, HVDC line control, power plant control systems and other EMS exchanges. GE Digital’s AEMS is natively integrated with our Renewable energies and DER orchestration solutions and Wide area management system (WAMS) that are expected to become essential solutions for PDOs as they move forward in their renewable journey.

“The global economic landscape will change rapidly over the next 10 years and integrating renewable energy sources into all grids is critical,” said Jim Walsh, general manager of GE Digital’s Grid Software business. “Industrial companies such as Petroleum Development Oman are using contemporary digital tools to deliver a reliable and more sustainable microgrid to support their core businesses.”
